It says: WRITE! JOURNAL! BLOG! EXPRESS! RECORD! And somehow whenever I get a free second I am just so exhausted that I end up watching Netflix or going to bed instead. (Does anyone else think watching "Netflix" sounds less embarrassing than watching "TV"? I feel like it's less lazy. Yeah, totally.)

The problem is that I have some serious topics to tackle. So here comes the disclaimer: I'm going to be writing about things that really matter to me. I don't claim to be able to back all of my opinions with procedural, analytical, or statistical data. I may do a couple educated google searches to try to back what I'm pretty sure is backable, but I also just feel some of this stuff.

It's okay with me if you disagree. But to be clear, I really don't mean to open up any heated arguments. I don't mean to convince. I am seeking to understand myself and to give others a glimpse into why I feel the way I do. Please read with some effort toward empathy and understanding. If you can't do that, maybe these entries aren't the ones for you. (Or at least not the ones to comment on).

So here I go trying to be true to myself just like Lilly is true enough to herself that if she wants to hide in the fridge, she just goes for it. I hope to someday be that cool. (Pun intended).

I have been asked some excellent questions and I've never answered
any of them to my satisfaction. I'm not always sure if people realize
how big their questions are. I try to be sensitive to not overwhelm or
bore them with my in-depth and often passionate answer. So I am re-purposing this blog to address some of those questions. Because maybe they really want to know.

So, if you really want to know...

Why I'm a feminist?

How I can stand working in such a "depressing field"? (I'm a mental health and drug and alcohol counselor)

How I'm doing following my miscarriage?

Why I haven't left my church despite my many grievances with it?

This is where I'm going to examine those difficult questions as honestly, openly, and vulnerably as I can.

Some
of my entries will be essay-like, responding to particular questions.
But, I also hope to use this blog to track my efforts to answer my own
big questions. These entries will be primarily for me and won't be
polished or essay-like at all. And, because un-polished-learning-as-I-go
is way less intimidating than trying to produce my most-up-to-date and
complete answer to a difficult question, I'll be starting there.
For those who haven't heard the phrase, it's probably self-explanatory, but I'll elaborate just in case. Self-care is anything you do to care for yourself, or as my good friends Tommy and Donna so elegantly put it:

I think that in my religious culture of Mormonism, a lot of value is placed on selflessness. While I'm not so sure I love that word, I do love a slightly modified version, charity. Charity, or the pure love of Christ, motivates us to love, not to judge others, and to serve and give our resources, time, and talents. Selflessness means putting others before yourself. I believe there is a time and place for selflessness but I also believe that true charity should apply itself fully to every living being, yourself included.

So in April, I focused on taking care of myself. I intended to do all kinds of amazing things to care for "the whole me." You know, physical (exercise, eat well, sleep well, etc), psychological (study new things, take breaks, breath deeply, etc), and spiritual (pray more sincerely, study the scriptures, meditate, and be more mindful).

Here's what I learned: While I completely believe that pushing yourself to achieve goals is one form of self-care, I think the best starting point is just DOING THINGS YOU WANT TO DO that are easy to do and require no motivation, because you are naturally motivated.

Wash my hands in warm water: It turns out that my hands are almost always cold. Rather than just turn on the faucet and take whatever I get (usually freezing cold water) I recently discovered that turning the faucet to warm and even waiting a minute for the water to warm up MAKES ME FEEL HAPPY!!! And, somehow, simple as it is, it makes me feel like I'm "treating myself" to a luxurious moment every time I wash my hands. This has become one of my favorite new forms of "self-care" and I have shared it with many of my clients.

Be outside: Without even consciously making this a goal, I somehow started spending at least SOME time outside every day. I found this to be surprisingly refreshing. Even on a cold or rainy day, a quick walk outside makes a world of difference to my mood.

Time to think: I have so many thoughts inside of me, it's unreal! Those that I most love to think are the optimistic ones relating to interests I'd like to develop, kind things that I could do, places I dream of visiting, and on and on and on.

Diet Coke: What can I say? I love me a good Diet Coke. There's something about drinking pop that feels like I am "treating myself." Also, Diet Coke is a relatively harmless way to do it.

Mindfulness: This one surprised me a bit. I downloaded a mindfulness app on my phone. It is a gong that goes of randomly throughout the day and reminds me to be present in that moment. (Meaning to experience it fully). I found that it was a little challenging for me to be mindful on command, but it did make me more generally mindful throughout the day. One interesting side effect was that I naturally, and with no intentional effort on my part, began to eat better. Being mindful of the signals my body gave me helped me realize that after eating a large serving of whatever, I was actually no longer hungry and didn't even want a second helping. It also helped me notice that certain foods really and truly make my body feel worse and other foods do the opposite. It was no earth-shattering difference, but it was perceptible. Which probably shouldn't have, but DID surprise me.

Prayer: An individual in my religious congregation made a statement in Primary (little kids' Sunday School) that has really stuck with me. It started with something like, "I need you to all show me how you can be reverent and listen..." followed by a self-correcting statement not entirely directed to the kids: "not that it's always about reverence." Or something to that effect. I thought it was funny at the time, but there was also something very profound about it. Sometimes in my faith, we act like "it's always all about reverence." Meaning we should sit down nicely with our arms folded and respectfully listen, to invite the Spirit of the Lord. (Or at least that's the image reverence is often simplified to when we teach the concept to our children). As I pondered this statement, I decided that it really isn't always about reverence. Sometimes it's about LOUD, EXCITING, DANCING FOR JOY PRAISE!!! And sometimes it's about authenticity and being honest, which for me often includes humor which some find to be irreverent. I have begun to allow my prayers to "not always be about reverence." When I'm doing it right, I feel more free to be authentic in my prayers. That means if I'm feeling goofy, I may joke around with God. If I'm angry, I may express that in whatever way feels right, if I'm sad, I may cry, joyous or grateful I may praise...whatever the case may be. I have found this kind of prayer to give me a more intimate sense of my relationship with my Heavenly Father.

Full disclosure: I wrote most of this post on June 12, 2015, months after I completed this goal and months after my most recent efforts to continue my "Perfect Year." See how cool not obsessing about perfection is? Because I'm willing to be "imperfectly perfect" I can just pick up where I left off without beating myself up over several missed months. Ta-da!!!
I didn't do a lot of what I planned, but instead of focusing on that (because obviously I gained nothing from the parts I didn't do) I want to reflect on "any positive change."

First, I'll share a secret. I have another year-long goal that I'm not writing about on this blog. I have a spiritual question that I have no answers for. I've had it for years and I have never made a serious effort to resolve it because it was discouraging how little is said about this question. I finally decided to put James 1:5 to the test on this issue.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">James 1:5-- If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
This year I am putting everything I have into this question. I'm going to ask and ask and ask God, but I am also going to show God that I am doing my part to receive personal revelation.

So. What did I do in February? I laid the groundwork for this "other" goal. I searched for resources related to my question and I compiled a list of books, essays, talks, scriptures, etc. to study. I started studying them.

Matt bought me a special notebook from Hallmark to use specifically for insights that I receive as I study this "question of the soul" as I like to call it.

And, you may wonder...am I filling it with insights? So far, each page I study leads me to several other sources that I want to study. So far, I'm filling it with "leads." Not many clues yet, but for the first time I feel like I have leads and that in and of itself is exciting. Having a plan, taking control. It's good stuff. Of course, I hope that God will share in this experience with me and begin giving me clues, and eventually help me to put the puzzle together. For now, I'm just excited to have a starting point.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8310863411853313981.post-6409379164105930842015-02-15T21:28:00.001-08:002015-03-02T20:36:37.722-08:00Why This isn't Really a "Perfect Year" and I'm Okay with ThatWhen I began this project, I chose the order of these first two months carefully, knowing that it is easier for me to feel spiritual when my home and mind are uncluttered. Of course, if you caught my recent video of Lilly that I posted to facebook, you know that the uncluttered clean home did not last. I have been tempted to start this whole year over because I have not been perfect in achieving my monthly goals, but I am constantly reminding myself that in this case, perfection is not my goal. This is not a perfect year and I do not intend for it to be so. Bear with me in the next paragraph here. It may sound a bit rambling, but I promise I'm coming back to the point.

In my career as a drug and alcohol counselor, there is a popular movement away from the all-or-nothing view of abstinence based programs toward a "harm reduction" approach. The idea behind this approach is that many people are not ready to quit using their drug(s). In fact, they may never have the desire or motivation to do so. If we limit their options to "quit or get out of treatment until you can," they miss out on an entire range of potential life-bettering changes that could occur.

For example, there may be a heroin user who will not consider quitting opiates. However, given the resources and opportunity, she may choose to change her habit of re-using old needles. She may choose, instead, to participate in a "clean needle exchange" which provides users with free, clean needles. While she will continue to suffer the harmful effects of the drug, her risk of contracting aids will decrease dramatically. This kind of change is positive and was worth the effort.

I have come to really love this concept, which is summed up by the mantra, "any positive change." To me, this means that perfection (in this case abstinence, in my case perfect completion of my goals) is not the only form of success. (That should be obvious, but sometimes it really isn't).

In the church, we often strive for perfection. Christ himself set the bar pretty high when he said "be ye therefore perfect even as your Father which is in Heaven is perfect." This sounds like it would be a very pleasant achievement, but I think Jesus knows that's not going to happen in this lifetime. I have felt the Spirit confirm to me that "any positive change" is a concept that pleases God. After all, the more harm reduction we do, the closer we get to the ultimate goal of perfection.

So, friends, I am not starting the year over so I can "do better this time," partly because then I would have to decide between waiting until January 2016 or counting 12 months from March, which just doesn't feel right (perfectionism dies hard), but mostly because I am meeting my goal of "any positive change" and I count that a success worth celebrating.
Matt, the girls, and I were lucky to have a nice long break
for Christmas this year. We, emboldened by our success last year,
decided to drive to Utah to visit family. The drive there was shockingly
pleasant. We left in the evening shortly after I got off work and drove
through the night. The girls fell asleep around 9pm, we took a short
nap in the car at a rest stop from about 2am-4am and stopped for meals.
The trip was a blast. We got to spend a week at my parents and a week at
Matt's mom's. While at Isabel's (Matt's mom) I came across the book
that I mentioned in my last post, "The Happiness Project" and read most
of it on our vacation. I finished it a few days after we got back and
started my own project, which I'm calling "The Perfect Year." (Not that I
intend to aim for perfection in the same way I do with my perfect
months, I just like the sound of it.)

So,
I decided that the first month should be something that would motivate
me and give me energy. For me, my living environment makes a huge
difference to my mood and energy. So, month one was dedicated to 1)
De-cluttering the house--I gave away several large grocery bags and
boxes full of STUFF that would not pass the "would we take it if we
moved" test. and 2) Decluttering my mind. I made lists for the three
major areas of my life right now (Home, Work, Church) of all the
"nagging tasks" that I've been avoiding. You know the ones, make a
dentist appointment, change the oil in the car, etc, etc. and started
working my way through them.

I set a goal to get rid of
at least one thing a day and to try to cross one nagging item off my
list per day. While I failed pretty badly at the "daily" aspect of this
goal, we have several empty shelves and extra storage space now and
things are easier to find. (And remember, despite my misleading choice
of a name for the project, I really don't intend for these to be
"perfect" months. I'm just hoping for any positive change).

I
don't feel like I ever met my BIG goal of the month of starting the
next month with a "fully cleaned" house, but we are stepping on
unidentified sticky chunks much less than we were a month ago. I call
that a win. (Kind of.)

Over Christmas I had the rare luxury of reading for pleasure when I noticed a book at Matt's mom's house that caught my attention: "The Happiness Project" by Gretchen Rubin. Obviously any book with the words "happiness" and "project" are right up my ally, so I picked it up.

Here's the basic premise: She studies everything she can about happiness, and develops a plan to make her life happier in 12 months. It is loosely based off of Benjamin Franklin's 13 Virtues (Emily M now H, I now know what you see in the man). Each month she charts herself on daily goals based on the virtue of the month, adding each new month to the previous months on the chart. I, being a goal and chart loving person myself, was drawn in by the idea and I'm now one month in to my newest self-improvement endeavor. I am not necessarily shooting for perfection on these goals in the same way that I did for the Perfect Month, but I am shooting for perfect charting and accountability. I will also plan to update this blog once weekly on Sundays to report on my progress.
I'll go back and fill in the last few days. This does not work! I am realizing that the power of accountability decreases if the accountability is not timely. (Woo! A lesson!)

Something strange has come of this goal. While I haven't necessarily improved in all categories, the category of keeping the house clean has improved drastically! I guess the thing that most needed work weaseled its way to the top of the priority list when I started looking at my list every day. (Another lesson?)

Today, after baths, we all got in our PJs and went for a "family pajama walk" in the woods. Lilly loved it and I really enjoyed it, too. I decided it may be a fun family tradition to have occasional evening "pajama walks."

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8310863411853313981.post-19765287614391177812014-07-13T19:25:00.002-07:002014-07-13T19:25:20.621-07:00Days 9-13: AccountabilityWednesday night I marked my "perfect" spreadsheet. Thursday and Friday night I did not and I can't honestly remember whether or not I did certain things on those nights. So the only thing I gave myself credit for was what I knew I did FOR SURE: Thursday I know I did not eat at McDonalds. (Woohooo!) Friday I went to bed early, did not eat at McDonalds and played with Tina and Lilly.

I don't mean to complain or make excuses, but life is crazy lately in a way I've never quite experienced until recently. The girls are sweet and fun but I only have about two hours a day to myself, if I'm lucky. That happens between the hours of 9pm-11pm and by then I am often so tired that I want nothing more than to watch a movie or a show with Matt and relax. Basically, there are many things I would like to do that are productive that will just not happen for a couple of years. If someone tells me about an awesome book they just read, I think "Oh! Sounds great. I haven't read for a while...maybe I'll take a loo (SPLASH!!) Ahhh! I spilled milk all over the floor! Lilly wet her pants and Tina's crying!"

This video kind of sums it up (the kids are even the right ages):

I realize I am lucky that I am able to have children and I'm grateful for all the joy they bring into my life. I have close friends who have not had an easy time conceiving so I realize how it can be annoying to hear moms complain. That being said, being a mom is not always roses and this video basically nails it.

Now, I'm done whining and ready to report on my progress:

I am not going to keep posting the poorly displayed spreadsheet on the blog because it's boring. Instead, I'll give general updates, while continuing to fill out the spreadsheet for my personal use. At some point I will ask Matt to teach me how to do something cool on Excel to display the data in a way that's worth sharing.

Here's what I've noticed: when I use the spreadsheet as a checklist I do much better. When I forget about it and just mark what I did at the end of the day, I don't. Lesson: Accountability only causes change when I actually intended to do something in the first place. I guess that ought to be obvious, but as a very wise old lady friend of mine used to say: "You live and you learn."

He had gone in to work over the holiday weekend and was going to stay home today and let me be in charge of what we do. I had planned on going to the YMCA with the girls, so I figured I'd let him take a much needed nap while I went. While there, I signed up for an orientation to the online workout program for Thursday. (I think it will just be 30 minutes w/ one of their trainers showing me how to use the machines, but I'm not sure). Once I've done this, I will have access to a computer-based workout program that I hope I can use to whip myself into fitness. :)

When we got back, we all went to Culvers (yay!), then went to a park and let Lilly play on the playground. Finally, at 6:00 Matt had to tutor someone at the library, so Lilly, Tina and I went and enjoyed the library while he tutored. When we got home we had worn Lilly and Tina out enough that they actually were both sleeping by about 9:10. HALLELLULIAH!!! It was like heaven. We watched a show together and ate a late dinner. Now, Matt just finished doing the dishes and appears to be cleaning the stove. (Swoon!) It's been a wonderful day. :)

I am also happy because I am doing better on my checklist. I haven't worked out in a LONG time, so just that one check makes me feel very happy.
Tonight was another night that the girls were not asleep until about 10:30. Not to whine, but that really makes it tough to get much done when you aim to be in bed by 11:00. Sigh.

I decided I am going to post daily, with my spreadsheet, but I obviously have not been writing much of interest on most days, so I will only "advertise" a new post on facebook when there's something worth reading. Perfectly accountable, but not perfectly boring. Deal?
Lilly just keeps bawling. No idea what's wrong. At first I thought it was night terrors (she's had them before) but this was different because she is slightly responsive. She can't explain to us what's wrong. The best I'm getting is that her foot hurts, but I don't see any reason why it would be hurting her and it was fine before she went to bed. Growing pains? Nightmares? Both?

When I went in, she was bawling uncontrollably and the only thing that she could think of that would help was to see "my baby Tina." Lucky for everyone, baby Tina was also refusing to sleep, so we brought her in to cuddle with Lilly. Lilly immediately calmed as soon as I put Tina next to her. She hugged her tight and said "my baby Tina!!!"

Unfortunately, we weren't about to leave Tina sleeping in Lilly's bed with her and Lilly went right back to bawling as soon as her baby was gone. It's 12:45AM and I can't tell you yet how this story ends because it's still happening. One good thing: I was finally able to get Tina to sleep in our room.

Here's my accountability for today and yesterday:

Happy 4th of July!!!! It started out a little rough here. Matt told me he would have to go in to work for a few hours (boo!) and then it looked like it might be most of the day. I was pretty disappointed because the 4th is one of my favorite Holidays and I was excited to enjoy Matt's day off with him, find a parade, go to the park, etc. before fireworks. As it turned out he was home by 1:00PM and we had a fun day after all.

The girls were darling all day. Lilly remembers the 4th of July from last year and she said "Mommy, I'm not gonna be scared of the fireworks this year, because I grew up a lot and I'm brave because I'm bigger now." She was true to her word. Tina was also mesmerized by them.

No, I didn't forget to mark for today. That's really how badly I did. But the good news is, my month is still perfect because I'm being accountable. I'm looking at those two little exes from today and saying, "wow. Most of the things that most matter to me I didn't do today." All the more motivation to pick it up a notch. After all, so far, my hypothesis that keeping track would increase my likelihood of following through is not very well supported. (Heh...)

To be fair, I did a lot of good things today that aren't on that list. Also, I spent some good quality time with the girls, I just didn't "play" by the intended definition of the word. Speaking of which, I'm going to blog soon about what I mean by each of these items.

Now, though, it's 1:15AM. Bedtime.
That is all I can do for tonight. I worked from 9am to 8pm and am going TO BED! Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8310863411853313981.post-60392679126587571062014-07-01T22:03:00.001-07:002014-07-04T21:35:41.002-07:00Day 1: AccountabilityI have, with Matt's help, created a pretty intensive spreadsheet of the things I would like to be doing with my time and energy. I don't expect to do any of them perfectly and that isn't my goal, but I would like to have them regularly on my mind and make an effort. So, my goal for the month of July:

Perfect accountability.

Every evening I will go through my spreadsheet and mark off what I did. To be clear, my goal is NOT to do each thing every day, but to pay attention to what I'm doing, give myself credit for what I'm already doing and stretch myself to do a little more.
I will work on finding a better way to display my spreadsheet in future posts, but I needed to get this done for tonight so I can go to bed. Zzzzz.....Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8310863411853313981.post-31962316934889148332014-03-26T09:09:00.000-07:002014-03-26T09:09:00.433-07:00Day 2: SleepI confess I went to bed at 11:01 or possibly even 11:02 last night. That's how seriously I'm taking this. It won't happen again. I'm learning that an important part of my get-ready-for-bed routine is getting Christina ready for bed. Turns out she likes to eat before going down for a nice all-night sleep. (Yes, she does sleep ALL night. We're talking from 11-7:30. I know I am so spoiled).

Two nights ago, I was proudly swaddling my full-tummied baby at 10:55pm and was about to set her down in her crib when...you guessed it...SPIT UP!!! And not a little. She needed a full outfit and blanket change. I enlisted Matt's help to get Tina to bed so that I could rush to brush my teeth, change and say my prayers and still hop into bed w/ lights out before 11:01. Matt is awesome. Of course, right after he got her changed and re-swaddled, she decided it was time for a diaper change, too.

Last night I was one or two minutes late because we started "Chuck" a little too late. (My new favorite Neflix addiction). Humor+Action+Plot+Romance+More Humor=Blissfully happy Cam

So I'm learning already. The things that are making it difficult to make it to bed before 11:00 are also the things that were surprising me (every night) and causing me to go to bed at 12:30 or 1:00 instead of a reasonable 12:00 like I'd planned.

Lessons so far:
Feed baby at least 30 minutes before I want to go to bed
Allow myself 10 minutes to brush teeth, get changed, say prayers, etc.
If we're going to watch a show, watch it early in the evening
Basically start getting ready 45 minutes before target bed time. Oh boy.
Side note: Lilly has been giving herself a new name every few days. It's always a name from/based off of a book or movie that she likes. She refuses to respond to Lilly (I don't think she's responded to Lilly for about a week now) and instead informs us that her name is _____ not Lilly. I figure, for fun, I'll document her names on this blog.

Me: Okay, here it goes: Day 1. Wait. Is today day one or was yesterday day one? I went to bed at 11:00 last night, but that was just a half-day.

Matt: I guess that is a standard that you get to set.

Me: You're right. A half day doesn't count. Today has to be day one.

Matt: (Laughs)

Me: (Confused about why he's laughing and almost assuming it's whatever he's reading/doing on his phone). Why'd you laugh?

Matt: I said that you could choose whether it's day one and you said, "you're right. It has to be day one." That's not at all what I said.

Me: Hmm. But I said "you're right." That's nice, isn't it?

aaaand impromptu woman-made border--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm happy to report that I made it to bed by 11:00. I'm a little less happy to report that minutes after I went to bed, Matt came in with Christina (my baby, not my sister...that would be REALLY weird) and she cried for milk. So, I didn't have time to fall asleep before I got back up, but what can you do when you're a mommy? Tonight I'll try to make sure Tina's fed before I go to bed.

After taking care of Tina, I went to bed with excited dreams of working out, reading my scriptures, and cleaning the house, all before anyone else woke up.

When my alarm went off at 6:30 I didn't want to work out. Imagine that. So I took a nice warm shower/bath and started the day in a less-jarring way. (Baby steps). Once I warmed up to the idea of morning, I called our friendly neighborhood job center to clear up a problem with our application for child care tuition assistance (Lilly's was set to end 6 months earlier than it should). Turns out without the county's help, I lose money by working. Thank you, government. I will pay you back when I'm rich.

That was a mini-tangent.
And I'm announcing a new Perfect Month, starting tonight. (In 17 minutes, actually). Now, I know what you're thinking, but I REALLY REALLY AM gonna do it this time. This month has been in the beta testing phase for two weeks already so it's all set and ready to go live.

With that, I need to get going because my new Perfect Month is:

Early to bed and early to rise!!! (I tried this one before, didn't I? I think I posted my favorite Youtube video on the topic and got a complaint from my good pal Jeni. True? Dig through the archives).
The rules? In bed, prayers said, lights off by 11pm. Out of bed at 6:30am. It's that simple. I need to seriously hurry now, if I don't want to blow it on day one.

Peace!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8310863411853313981.post-30946733835082945772013-09-01T21:14:00.001-07:002013-09-01T21:32:13.739-07:00Day 1: Relationship Building

Whoa! I blasted you with a kissing photo on day one! Booyah!!!

This is on the ski-lift at the MN state fair from last month. We thought we'd get an early start on our perfect month of relationship building by displaying our affection publicly, then taking a selfie so that we could display it even MORE publicly all over again. This is the start of some major relationship growth. I can feel it. (In fact, where is that hottie? I want to kiss him more). Just kidding. Just trying to weed out those who are too weak to read this month.

Tonight was a nice start to a perfect month. We did this sit-outside-after-Lilly's-asleep thing once last month and decided that it was really nice. I was amazed at that time, and again, tonight at how much Matt has to say! For whatever reason, when I ask him about his day at dinner, he gives me the 30 second version, but when we're sitting out under the stars, I hear about his excitement, fears, anxiety, hopes...it's really fun.

Tonight he started things off by asking about how I'm feeling about next week. I described to him a few things that will make it an exciting week for me (Monday Matt stays home since it's Labor day, Tuesday I watch three two year olds, Wednesday is work, Thursday is our 20 week ultrasound, etc) and then I asked him about his coming week. He went on to tell me all about his current project with his research group and how things are progressing, his final class that starts on Wednesday, his thoughts about his research and progress in his PhD in general, etc. It was really nice and I realized that I need to make more of an effort to listen and understand what is going on in Matt's work-life. When we were first married, I could explain his research about as well as he could. I've lagged a bit on giving it the attention necessary for me to grasp it. It is really fun to hear him talk about what he's learning, though, and I do feel closer to him when I know he can talk to me about it and I will understand what he's saying. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8310863411853313981.post-75352108916203786272013-09-01T21:03:00.002-07:002013-09-01T21:03:26.792-07:00Announcing: September's Perfect Month!!!Welcome September! This is the first September in a LONG Time that I haven't been in school. And as much as I love school, it does feel kind of awesome to not be gearing up for another semester.

Sometimes it's hard for me to think of a topic that I care about enough to commit myself to a perfect month, but this month's goal is one that I have been thinking about for a long time and I feel extremely committed to and excited about.

I think cutting my hulu/netflix viewing down prepped me for this month by helping me realize how much time I have in a day and how I can better use it. This month, I've decided to spend time every day working on my relationship with Matt.

Here're the specifics:

We will spend time daily talking, just the two of us, after Lilly goes to bed. If the weather's nice, we'll grab our camping chairs and sit outside. (We'll open Lilly's bedroom window, lock the apartment, and sit outside within earshot of her window in case she needs us). If the weather's not so great, we'll do this in the living room on the couch.

We will have a date every single week. A specific, planned, intentional date.

At least two of the 4 dates will be sans Lilly with a babysitter watching her

Basically, we want to be these guys.

We had three awesome road trips last month and I'm happy to report that Lillian is now a pro. Matt and I had such a fun time talking with each other, I thought 'why can't we do this all the time?' Minus the 600 mile drive, of course.

Also, Matt and I hang out basically every moment that we're not working and often end up doing impromptu "dates" rather than really setting a specific time aside for US. I suspect that having a night that is officially a "date" rather than a "let's get dinner out tonight because I don't feel like cooking" will feel different. Like the good old days when I would dress up cute and wear body spray and all that adorable date-prep stuff. (Though I doubt that prep experience will be the same without 110-ers).

The last item is a bit radical. We probably average a date without Lilly every 4 months, if that. I'm kinda pumped about that particular part of this goal.

Alright, I'll keep you posted. Feel free to ask awkwardly personal relationship questions because I'm about to be a LOVE GURU.

Lilly has a dentist appointment, I have a dermatology appointment (when I finally set it up I found out the referral was expired--my doctor referred me there a few days more than a year ago....oh boy...). Basically, to spare you from a list of things I've done, I'll just tell you there are a lot of things like that that I've been putting off for a YEAR and are now officially crossed off my to-do list.

I have something way more exciting to blog about, anyway!

Last weekend, Matt, Lilly, and I (and baby-in-my-tummy) went on a roadtrip to St. Paul for one of my best friends' wedding! It was a blast and I have pictures to prove it!

We left Friday morning at about 5:30am, sleepy Lilly in tow. We fully expected her to sleep for at least a few hours, but.... NOPE. We fully expected her to cry and squawk and plead to get out of her carseat but....also NOPE. She quietly cuddled with her blankie the entire 4 hour drive to the hotel where Em had her breakfast. It was amazing! Matt and I felt like we were newlyweds again, talking and enjoying each others' company the whole way there! And I remembered...I love road trips! (Under the right circumstances, of course).

We got a little turned around in St. Paul and wound up about 20 minutes late for the breakfast, by the time we'd changed into our formals. Also, we realized we forgot to bring ANY shoes for Lilly and we'd forgotten to grab her dress from the car. So poor Lilly looked like a dirty little rag-a-muffin with messy hair and the white, stained t-shirt she was sleeping in. That did not keep Dave from being a complete lifesaver and holding her for us while we ate. Lilly LOVES him. The two bonded and played while we hung out with Emily and Jeremy, Deb, and the rest of the table.

The food was delicious and the hotel where the breakfast was held was breathtaking. Emily and Jeremy seemed so happy and it was fun to see them together.

After the breakfast, we headed over to the temple, but on the way swung by K-Mart to buy Lilly some shoes. She was so excited about her "Pwetty new white shoes!"

The temple sealing was beautiful and, yes, I cried. It felt to me like the sealer's words to Emily and Jeremy before the sealing were so specifically what the Lord wanted them to hear on this important day. Lilly got to hang out in the waiting room with Emily's sisters and cousins. (So sweet of them to watch her for us!)

Here's Lilly playing her favorite game of the day:

And here are Em and Jeremy exiting the temple right after getting married! So cute. I love Emily's "now what?" comment.

Here is a Here are some pictures from after the wedding:

During the reception I decided to be the videographer, which left Matt taking care of Lilly all by himself (bless him!). They quickly found themselves at the playground across the street from the church. :)

Here, Lilly made her appearance at the reception and quickly found her favorite person there: Emily's dad, Dave. :)

And her second favorite person, "Pwetty bwide Emiwy in hew pwetty white dwess!"

The three amigas reunited! We are ALL off the market now. Sorry, boys. It was also fun to see many other old friends who I haven't seen in a long time. Unfortunately, I was so busy with the video cam that I didn't get many pictures.

Now, in order to maintain some pretense about this post having anything to do with my goal, I'd better update: Friday night, IN THE HOTEL, with the BIG FLAT SCREEN HD TV, we watched one and only one tv show. Wooo hhoooo! I'm amazing. And Lilly was SO exhausted after her non-stop-from-5:30am-on-day, that she fell asleep in the car on the way to the hotel from the reception, stayed asleep when we plucked her out of her carseat, and didn't wake up until 8:00am the next morning. :)

Speaking of the next morning, we had a great time with my brother, Mark. He joined us for a morning swim in the hotel pool (which was sooo warm and comfy), then we spent the day at the Mall of America and the evening at his apartment where he made us a DELICIOUS homemade pizza.

Here we are at the MOA. Lilly was ecstatic to see a life-size (bigger than life size in her case) robot wandering the halls. She has been very into robots lately and even has her own costume, which I believe has already been featured on this blog.

We decided to splurge and check out the Aquarium while we were there, too. It was a blast! Unfortunately you can't see much of the fish in this picture, but it sure is a cute bro/sis pic!

Here we are at Mark and Len's place. We told them pretty last-minute that we'd be in town, and she had plans already, so we didn't get to see much of her, but Lilly loved every minute that she was home. :)

And there she is bonding with her uncle, Mark, or as she called him: "Muncle."

Alright, I hope you'll all excuse my travelog, but I figured at least Emily and Mark would enjoy it. I'll do another post to wrap up what I learned from this perfect month, since it is officially complete!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8310863411853313981.post-34897284652742032762013-07-28T18:57:00.002-07:002013-07-28T18:57:11.862-07:00Days 9-21: Extra TimeHello everyone! I am back to report a shocking new development in my perfect month of "Extra Time."

Despite this entry covering days 9-21, I am coming back to report that my blogging has not (this time) been adversely affected by my utter failure at my goal!!

Or in other words, I'm still perfect with my one-show-a-day goal. I should admit that I made a slight adjustment (as I have in other goals, and for which I feel no remorse or shame). There was a day when I watched a show while Matt was at school, but really wanted to watch something quick with him that night. I decided that I'd watch two shows and use my "movie" chip for the week. Two shows basically equal one movie, right?

Ok. Glad we're square.

Now...about Lilly. Lilly's been developing her imagination lately, by pretending that robots are coming. Her daddy decided that he ought to encourage this new fascination and built her her very own robot costume!

Here is version 1.0

And version 2.0 (with paper glued to it to cover up the "Raisin Bran") In the picture below, she's making a "robot face."

Okay. My plan was to hurry and hook you with cute pictures and then keep talking about myself, so here it comes...

I'm also happy to report that, although I still feel like there are a plethora of unnecessary time-vacuums in my life, I have managed to attack my "avoid list" since the last entry. Can't say that I've gotten to everything, but here are a few of the things I've done. (Remember, though these sound like pretty simple tasks, that some of them have been on my to-do list for several years).

Talked to co-worker about his contact with Centro Hispano

Called Centro Hispano about possibly starting a youth psychoeducational group there

Followed up with Eagle Heights about the same thing (need to do this again, though. I haven't heard back from them)

Attached my water-bottle cage to my bike

Called our insurance and found out we DO have dental coverage (WOOOO HOOO!!)

Gotten the phone number for our dentist (still working on actually setting appointments)

Completed the UW Health Initiative and already been rewarded with a nice fat pre-paid visa

Filled out "Therapist Specialty" form and emailed it back

Did online training for work

Wow. I was just looking at my last post's "avoid list" and I have actually done a lot more than I thought!

Go me!!!!!!!

For those of you who decided to join me in this perfect month, how is it going? I hope my lack of posts didn't cause anyone to fall off the wagon.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8310863411853313981.post-87820114508416475472013-07-15T18:55:00.003-07:002013-07-15T19:11:02.966-07:00Days 7-8: Extra TimeYesterday, as all Sundays are, was a crazy time-sucking vortex and I have no idea what happened to the day. All I know is that all the good intentions that I felt impressed to act on during the excellent Relief Society lesson fell flat when I got home and it was suddenly 12:00AM.

Just for the sake of completeness, I better not skip a chance to tell you what we watched last night.

Actually, now that I think about it, that's basically where all the time went. It was an hour and a half. Mystery solved. (Shameful)

Today, probably in response to yesterday's "what did I do all day" feeling, I worked as HARD as I could. In the morning, I took Lilly to the YMCA and dropped her in the daycare while I did the elliptical for 30ish minutes (ok, that doesn't sound like much, but anything over 5 minutes of cardio is hardcore for me).

Then when we got home, I did the laundry, washed all the dishes, cleaned the stove and wiped the countertops, made some banana bread (first time!) and swept the kitchen. Considering my dream of having the entire apartment spotless to surprise Matt when he got home, my results were actually kind of pathetic. I have had this dream many times since Lilly became mobile, but I don't think I've ever successfully accomplished it yet. Someday....

Anyway, it still turned out to be a more productive day than I've had in a while. Lilly even "helped me" clean by picking up a piece of food that she found on the kitchen floor and throwing it in the garbage.

As far as my goal to attack the "Avoid" list, I've done better than I have in the past, but it's interesting to see how there's a hierarchy of items that I'm avoiding and I happily do some before others. I think that's cheating. I'm supposed to start with the worst ones.

Here's what I HAVE done:

Set up meetings for work that I've been nervous about

Attended one of the meetings

Sent out emails for RS

Gotten completely caught up on case notes for work (woooohoo! This took almost an entire day)

Attempted to find the phone number for our dentist

Found out that it appears our insurance no longer covers dental (nooooO!!!!)

Tried to put the waterbottle mount on my bike (the one I bought a month ago)

Found out that we don't have the right size allen wrench to do that

Finally put the ice scraper back in the car (it's been sitting next to the door for months)

Make initial attempt at setting up Visiting Teaching visits

And probably some other stuff I forgot.

Now here's the list that I still need to attack

Call Centro Hispano about setting up counseling groups for kids

Follow up with EH Community Center about the same thing

Put the waterbottle on my bike

Call our insurance to hear them tell me to my face (kind of) that we REALLY TRULY no longer have dental coverage (Wah!)

Shop around for a dentist

Participate in UW health initiative where they test our blood and we fill out a questionnaire about our health habits so Matt and I can qualify to receive $100 each, which we will most likely then put toward our dentist visits

Schedule dentist visits

Get dermatologist referral renewed

Set dermatologist appointment

Fill out "Therapist Specialty" form and email it back

Contact co-worker to find contact info for Centro Hispano

Do online training for work

Make appointment to visit WIC

I think that's it for now. It's funny what makes the "avoiding" list. I mean, I have a to-do list that's much longer, but these are the things that I usually put at the end of that list. Some of them have been at the end for a long LONG time.

Hmmm.

What does this list say about me?

Oh. I know, I know! It says I'm pregnant (WIC)! Surprise! I meant to tell some of my close friends before posting it online, but I figure if you read my blog, you either ARE a close friend, or you deserve to be one of the first to hear, anyway. :) I'm due at the end of January.

If you're someone who doesn't know me personally, I would be very curious to hear how you found the blog and what you think of it. Please feel free to leave a comment. I noticed that I'm starting to get a little traffic from mormonmommyblogs, so I'd love to hear from that/those readers.

Thanks to everyone who reads and comments. As always, it means a lot to me and it gives me the motivation to follow through on these goals.

Love!
It was fantastic, as it was last year. The art there is beautiful and inventive and the food is delicious, too. Lilly especially enjoyed dancing to the music and running on the lawn outside the capitol building. She wasn't as much a fan of being carried through the crowds of people and looking at the art. (Too bad. I kinda liked that part. (Well, the looking at the art part. No one carried me, but if they had I definitely would not have resisted the way Lilly did.)

Lilly was really tired by the end and wanted to cuddle this sign. Hmm....

After Lilly's nap today, she found Mommy napping in Mommy's room. Daddy came in shortly after Lilly and got to play with us as Lilly set the scene for her first imaginary game (not counting using props to eat/drink).

Here's the scene: "The robots are coming with us!" (She often says "with" when she means "for") "The robots are coming in Mommy and Daddy's room!" (said with pretend fear and wonder in her eyes, and pointing at the ceiling). As we played along, we learned that they were "little tiny" robots, that there were two of them, they were "friendly" and one was coming into Lilly's room and one was coming into Mommy and Daddy's room (where we were all huddled on the bed defensively). We also learned that the one coming into Mommy and Daddy's room was a "girl robot." And that "we're family" and if "we cuddle" we'll be ok.

See all the fun things that can happen when I'm not watching TV?

Then Matt and I made funnel cakes and watched Doctor Who together. Wooo~! Fun day.
Not so! I just didn't blog very faithfully, but here it is:

Wednesday was a slow day at work in that I only saw one client before the group I run, however, it was crazy day in that I managed to use those hours to do some intense catching up on notes. You may or may not realize that therapists have to do a TON of paperwork. Until recently, the agency I work at was actually doing this work on paper. Luckily, we have switched to electronic notes now, and that saves a lot of time. Unluckily, it took the first four weeks of my working there for me to get up and running on the electronic system, so I had four weeks' worth of paperwork to do.

I'm proud to say that I am completely caught up on all of my electronic notes (notes describing each of my individual sessions with clients as well as a note for each individual member of each week of group). There are just a few more paper-chart things that I need to finish in order to be completely caught up. WOooo Hoooo! And all because I didn't watch TV at work. (JUST KIDDING. I have never watched TV at work, unlike a few PhD students I know...cough cough).

Okay, Matt says no one actually does that. My apologies to PhD students who I know.

I better get on to the good stuff, though. I know that in this blog about limiting TV consumption, the greatest curiosity is: WHICH SHOW DID I WATCH????

So...on Wednesday we watched the Food Network's "Food Network Star."

On Thursday Lilly actually took a nap (this is becoming pretty rare these days) and I decided to watch one of my faves, "Switched at Birth," a show about two girls (and their families) who found out as teenagers that they were accidentally switched at birth. Super over-the-top high-school dramatic, but almost entirely squeaky clean. Fun!!!

Should I be embarrassed that this month's goal is turning into an advertisement for my favorite shows? Probably.

I learned something important on Thursday, though. Watching TV in the middle of the day makes me feel like BLUNK. (Made that word up just for this). I didn't get a chance to get anything much done before Matt got home, then when he was ready to relax I couldn't watch a show with him (like we do every night after Lilly goes down) and I didn't feel like working since he was chilling. I was very unproductive and unhappy.

So there you have it. I've learned something valuable from this month already.

Tonight, although we're behind on several of our favorite shows, we have already decided to watch the episode that will catch us up on Food Network Star. I don't know why, but we are both really loving that show right now. It's been cracking me up.

Woooo. Long one. That's what I get for not blogging for a couple of days. I should probably post a picture of Lilly on here, or I'll lose my family-followers.

This one's a few weeks old, but it cracks me up and deserves some publicity. This is Lilly in the bike trailer after a particularly muddy bike-ride. Poor thing. She was a pretty good sport, considering.
